    One line poem

    Della Reese, from Belarus.

(This only works if you know that Belarus is pronounced Bella-roose, which I shamefully did not know for a while. I thought it was Bell-air-us. Look how much I’ve grown!)

    Particular Fanfictions: Writers writing Writers

Tonight, I’ll be at Lorem Ipsum books, 1299 Cambridge Street, Cambridge, MA as part of a fanfiction night.

There’s nothing new under the sun.
The world is sick and old and tired. But instead of mass suicide, let’s celebrate with fan fiction. Some might call it appropriation. Others call it theft. For now, let’s call it a decent excuse to drink beer in a bookstore.

Contrary to expectation, this won’t be a parade of pocked Trekkies wrenched from their mothers’ basements only to stutter out stories about that one time Bones gave Spock a handy. None of our very special guests—Chris Braiotta, Erik Kraft, Katie McCarthy, Eugenia Williamson—would dare utter the names Hermione, Katniss, or Edward.

The evening’s readers, having sought a more sophisticated solution to non-canonical writing forego the conventionally sweaty pop-culture caricatures of beloved fictional characters, instead delving straight into the expanded-universes of the authors who ordinarily reside safely behind the pen. So please celebrate the too-human desire to retreat into a fictional world of someone else’s creation and make what was theirs all yours, and then ours again.

The evening’s guests & their selections:
    - Eugenia Williamson (of the Boston Phoenix) on Jonathon Franzen
    - Chris Braiotta on Airwolf
    - Erik Kraft on Milton Berle
    - Katie McCarthy on a certain NPR humorist

    —Thursday - May 24th - 7:30pm—
We’ll have drinks on hand and available for a suggested donation of $2- So come bask in the unending glory of over 25,000 great used titles, take in some one of a kind fan fiction and help support the space! See you there.”

If you happen to find yourself in the Littleton, MA area in the next month, I have a small art show there in the Reuben Hoar Library. There’s some Lenny and Mel and Miracle Wimp art, as well as some wildly inaccurate narrative about how a book is made. Here I am looking awesome near some of it.
