A Return to Form
Boss Chicken was once voted Most Likely To Try To Escape back when the chickens were inside. She’s trying to regain that old title lately. This morning when I opened the coop door, she made a break for it at the same time I was going out. My surprisingly-fast-for-before-6-am reflexes prevented this. We’ve been letting them step just outside the run when we get home at night, but they obviously want more. Which we will give them, when we have the time to be as vigilant as it calls for. I haven’t seen the hawk lately, but there are always dogs afoot.

The good bugs are totally on the outside, but that may just be because they eat anything foolish enough to wander within the walls.

Don’t go in! You’ll be next!
I finally got the compost pile organized too. I had to rip out a bunch of invasive pricker bush, which then went right into the pile. Then everything gets leaves on top, which we have loads of.

We also have loads of potato bugs that were camped out on the pallets. Now they can feast like kings on two months of chicken bedding. That’s what kings eat, right?
