“ He was known to begin classes by barging into the lecture hall, sometimes in era-appropriate chain mail armor, and bellowing the opening lines of Beowulf at the top of his lungs. As one of his students put it, “He could turn a lecture room into a mead hall.

    What A Rip - Day 41

Miles Davis – A Tribute To Jack Johnson, Sketches Of Spain, Kind Of Blue, In A Silent Way

(Many eras represented. And no, A Tribute To Jack Johnson is not about the American folk rock singer-songwriter, surfer and musician known for his work in the soft rock and acoustic genres.)

Dinosaur Jr. – Where You Been?

(I’m skeptical of things post-Bug, but I suppose some Dinosaur Jr. is better than no Dinosaur Jr.)

    Dirt Merchants - Scarified

(Another band that was huge when I first moved to Boston.)

The Doleful Lions – Motel Swim

(See, even lions are on the dole! This is what’s wrong with America!)

    Donovan – Troubadour – The Definitive Collection/1964-1976

(My feelings about Donovan and definitiveness are equal.)

    What A Rip - Day 40

    Codeine – The White Birch

(Eventually the painkiller band name thing would have led us to Ibuprofen.)

Containe – Only Cowards Walk Like Cowards

    (Founders of the Container Store.)

    Cornelius – Point

(Bleeps and bloops and freaky loops.)

Elvis Costello and the Attractions – Blood And Chocolate

(“Two great tastes that go great together!” – a Twilight fan.)

    Elvis Costello – Spike

(“Beat it, The Attractions!” – Elvis Costello.)

Cub – Come Out Come Out

(Is there a statute of limitations on coining the term “cuddlecore?”)

    Marshall Crenshaw – Good Evening

(Inventor of the Marshall amp. His friends call him “Crensh.”)

    Crowded House – Woodface

(That old joke about Wood Eye failed to mention that his whole face was actually wooden. This album aims to set that straight.)

    What A Rip - Day 39

    Cinerama – This Is Cinerama

    (Is this Cinerama?)

    The Clean – Unknown Country

    (Unknown country, known goodness.)

Clem Snide – You Were A Diamond

(I already made a joke about being snide, right?)

    Cocorosie – Noah’s Ark

(Cool kids get record deal, publicist. I actually kind of like this, but it’s also pretty annoying. From that era when everyone sang like tiny elves.)

Patsy Cline – The Last Sessions

(She has a song called “Crazy Arms” on here, which I think is about the moment right after you stop carrying something heavy that you have been carrying for a long time.)

Cocteau Twins – Sunburst and Snowblind/Head Over Heels

(Only now do I notice the “Cock Toe” joke to be made here? Time to retire.)

    What A Rip - Day 38

Black Rebel Motorcycle Club – B.R.M.C.

(Just try to find a picture of these guys where they’re not trying really hard to look rock and roll.)

Birdsongs Of The Mesozoic – Faultline

(I went to a music workshop put on by these guys when I was in high school. A lot of time was spent making fun of Chariots of Fire, which is on here. Fast forward 20 some odd years later, and my co-worker says, “Oh, I bet you’ll appreciate this – I’m doing all the drum machine stuff for Birdsongs Of The Mesozoic now.” A lot of weird coincidences are happening that make me think I have come full circle and am back in high school again.)

    Bikini Kill – Pussy Whipped

(Sometimes I think I’m angry, then I hear this, and it’s not even close.)

    Big Dipper – Love Barge

(This was still in the shrinkwrap. DERP.)

Big Star – Columbia: Live At Missouri University 4/25/93, Live

(Everyone was jumping on the live Big Star bandwagon in the early 90s, it seems.)

Big Black – Songs About Fucking

    (Steve Albini, OG troll.)

The Bevis Frond – Son Of Walter, North Circular

(For some reason, these each had one song that took a really long time to rip. I assume that’s due to excessive soloing.)

    Bettie Serveert – Palomine

    (Another pro-Sweden argument.)

Jacob Berendes – Ordem e Progresso

(I got this in trade from him at a Beantown Zinetown years ago. Then, some time later when I had forgotten about this, he played a show with a friend of mine, and just totally killed it. This CD is all sample-based, and nothing like the stuff he did at the show I saw, but he produces quality goods, regardless of style.)

    What A Rip - Day 37

The Cardigans – Emmerdale,  Life, First Band On The Moon, Gran Turismo, Rise & Shine: Under The Covers

(One year my roommate and I each gave the other “First Band On The Moon” for Christmas. It was like the Gift of the Magi, but less tragic and ironic. And more Swedish.)

Cars Can Be Blue – Self-titled EP

(Cobraman remains the dirtiest record I have ever heard, but these guys make a valiant effort.)

Cat Power – What Would The Community Think?

(Predicting Jesse Jackson’s infidelities in 1996.)

    The Chills – Submarine Bells

(Good things come out of New Zealand.)

Chocolate USA – All Jets Are Gonna Fall Today

(They were originally called Miss America, until the Miss America people threatened to sue. So they changed their name, and then ran a big picture that says “OK Miss America! We thank you for your patronage.)

    Cinerama – Va Va Voom

(The Boy Gedge has written a decent song or two.)

    What A Rip - Day 36

Bricks - A Microphone And A Box Of Dirt

(This is Collin’s, and I know nothing about it. It’s on Merge though, so the assumption is that it’s pretty good.)

William S. Burroughs – Dead City Radio

(Pretty much worth it for him singing “Ich Bin Von Kopf Bis Fuss Auf Liebe Eingestellet” (aka “Falling In Love Again”).)

Butthole Surfers – Locust Abortion Technician, Independent Worm Saloon, Humpty Dumpty LSD

    (Thumbs up for buttholes.)

The Byrds – Sweetheart of the Rodeo, The Original Singles Vol. 1

(In case the box set wasn’t comprehensive enough.  Sweetheart of the Rodeo is certainly worth having in and of itself.)

John Cale – The Island Years, Paris 1919

(Neither of these contain the live version of Pablo Picasso that clocks in at 16ish minutes, but both are great records. Great songs, and he’s probably less of a dick than Lou Reed.)

Call and Response – Call and Response

(Another Collin mystery. Kevin Barnes from Of Montreal is a guest on this. It’s also on Kindercore/Emporer Norton, so I will listen to this.)

Camera Obscura – Underachievers Please Try Harder

(Camera Obscura has always struck me as a less edgy Belle and Sebastian, which you wouldn’t think was even possible.)

Camper Van Beethoven – Our Beloved Revolutionary Sweetheart, The Third Album Plus Vampire Can Mating Oven

(The liner notes to Vampire Can Mating oven are why my friend and I used to yell “Fishsticks!” out the radio station window at passersby.  It also contains a righteous cover of “Photograph.”)

    What A Rip - Day 35

Richard Buckner – Devotion and Doubt

(Man, Red Sox fans HATE this guy. Oh wait, different Buckner.)

Tim Buckley – The Dream Belongs To Me – Rare and Unreleased Recordings

(Part of the dream is apparently long hippie jams.)

Buffalo Tom – Big Red Letter Day, Let Me Come Over,  Fortune Teller, Birdbrain

(These guys played the little all-ages club I went to in high school before they had a record deal, and they seemed really hardcore at the time. I guess that might say something about the bands that usually played there. Except Anal Fist. THOSE GUYS were hardcore.)

Built To Spill – Keep It Like A Secret

(Keep it like a secret, but eat it like a banana.)

    Bulkhead – Plunk

(It’s getting Bostony in here.  This is on Sonic Bubblegum, which was a cool 90s Boston label.)

    Bullet Lavolta – Swandive

(When I first moved to Boston in 1993, these guys were huge. Now, I look at them on the cover of this with their metal dude hair, and man. I don’t even know what to say. One of them is even wearing a tux.)

    Bunnygrunt – Action Pants!

(I never was able to find a pair of action pants that fit, but I did get a pink Bunnygrunt t-shirt).

Vashti Bunyan – Just Another Diamond Day

(Her career never took off the way her husband Paul’s did.)

    Buttercup – Love

(My wife and I went to Iceland one time, and as we were out looking for excitement, we saw that a bar had a band called Buttercup playing. It was not the same Buttercup, but we did meet a guy who was very into the Icelandic Buttercup, but wouldn’t say why. Finally, all embarrassed, he whispered to me, “It’s very sexy music.” I guess that means there was a girl in the band, because it wasn’t very sexy. His friend told us, “He is a horny fisherman.” Anyway, different Buttercup.)

    Butterglory – Crumble

(This was in the Disc Diggers 99 cent bin. Bargain of the century.)
